Speaking on an RTHK radio programme, AFCD principal veterinary officer Michelle Yeung said there has been an uptick in public reports regarding suspected fighting dogs, noting that her colleagues have been deployed more frequently for on-site checks. She said that the current identification process relies on visual assessments by veterinarians. Under the internationally accepted method, officials evaluate a dog's physical traits such as the shape of its head, stature, and overall body structure to determine its breed category. When classification disputes arise, the department will strive to determine the dog's status accurately, Yeung said. She also stressed that the aim of fighting dog regulations is to protect public and animal safety. "Dog owners are required to renew their dog licence every three years, as a rabies booster vaccination is needed," she said. "At that time – whether they visit an external clinic where they will be seen by a veterinarian, or come to our animal management centre for the vaccination – our staff will also observe the dog.
